Winning mindsets

You don’t get paid to sing in the shower…

Are you afraid of being too visible? I talk to a lot of entrepreneurs and often hear the following, “You know Heather, I don’t want to be a STAR, I just want to run my business.” I used to think, “Well, different strokes for different folks,” but I don’t feel that way any more. Now, I’m pretty much convinced that not wanting to be a star is simply fear masked as something else. Before you think I’m being judgmental, let me assure you, my belief comes from my own experience. You may think, based on my brand, that I am and have always been very comfortable being visible. However, internally there have been many times I’ve wanted to retreat and run for the hills. Those times usually look like the following: -My launch didn’t work so I feel embarrassed and want to hide. -I’m afraid IF I launch, no one will show up. -I’m afraid if I put myself out there and screw up, I’ll ruin my entire career. -I’m afraid I’m in over my head and people are going to see I’m just a poser. -I’m afraid I’ll say the wrong thing and offend someone. -I’m afraid people will see […]

How To Do The Hard Stuff

You know that feeling when you realize you have a dentist appointment on the calendar? You soooo don’t want to go, but you know you have to. Even though you know it’s the best thing for your health, you’d rather stick a fork in your eye. That’s how the last several days were for me. I had about a billion obligations that I absolutely did not want to deal with. For starters, our fridge broke and it was up to me to empty out all the rotting veggies and meat. Gross. I found out the tires on our minivan were bald and had to get them replaced. And there was yet another technical snafu with my website. That’s just a small sampling and I won’t bore you with the rest. They were all things I didn’t want to face, but still had to handle. We all have responsibilities that make us want to run for the hills. In our business it might show up like: -Not paying attention to expenses. -Procrastinating on creating a sales pages. -Avoiding picking up the phone to follow-up on leads. -Freaking out about doing a live-stream. But by not doing what we know we must, we move further and further away from creating a […]

Want To Master Time?

Do you ever finding yourself saying, “I wish I had more time?” Our lives can often feel out of balance. We get stuck involved in tasks or projects that suck our energy and keep us from doing the things we really want to do. We take on more than we can handle and find ourselves overwhelmed. It seems like there’s always something that feels unmanageable. We can’t seem to carve out time to go to the gym. Our summer calendar gets booked and we regret not allowing time to sit on the hammock with a cold drink and a juicy novel. As entrepreneurs, we get behind on our launches, miss opportunities to follow-up on leads, tax our minds with busy work and neglect our bodies all because we’re crunched for time. Whatever the specifics of the situation, running out of time can result in feeling rushed, anxious, sad or even resentful and for good reason. We are missing out on the best parts of our lives, leaving money on the table and pushing aside our deeper callings. Why do we do this to ourselves? I think the answer is pretty simple… fear. We fear if we don’t work our asses […]

How To Make A Successful Comeback

In the game of life, you win some and you lose some. It happens to everyone, even the greats. What you may not realize is, winners actually lose waaaayyyyyy more often than losers. Before we go any further, let me clarify what I mean by “loser.” I mean those who quit or throw in the towel before they achieve their goals. If you’re still in the game, you’re a winner in my book. Because the game, whatever your game is, can get pretty rough. Even if you are doing something you love, there will always be challenges and disappointments and some bigger than others. If you’re still trying and committed with an open and hopeful heart, you’re a winner. But still, how do you overcome those bumps in the road? How do jump back up when it feels like you’ve been sucker-punched in the gut? If you don’t mind too terribly much, I’m going to take a play out of Tom Brady’s book. Now love him or hate him, you have to admit the guy’s a winner. Ever hear of a little thing called “Deflate Gate?” Last year Tom Brady was accused of deflating the Super Bowl game balls so […]

Are You Doing Whatever It Takes?

Do you have a big dream? What is it? Exactly. Can you articulate it right now in great detail? How does it make you feel when you see your vision in black and white? Pretty awesome I bet, excited and raring to go. Now let me ask you how do you feel when you think about all the work it’s going to take to bring your vision to fruition? Do you suddenly feel scared or overwhelmed wondering how the heck you are going to get from where you are now to where you want to be? The next time someone asks you what you do, say “Whatever it takes.”- Lewis Howes. I’m going to let you in on a little secret, if you want to achieve anything great, you have to learn to love the pain. Now before you shoot darts at me, let me explain. Entrepreneurship is a battle zone. There are challenges at every corner AND it is the most exhilarating ride of your life. If you only love the highs, you are going to come down crashing, hard, and more than likely quit before you get to paradise. You have to learn to embrace the lows for what they […]

How To Overcome Detours In Your Business

Road Closed…Under Construction…Detour… Every single time I get in the car these days, I hit a road block, literally. In my town alone there must be 4 different road work projects going on. I know it’s summer and in New England that’s the time you work on roads. I get it, but I hate it. More than once this week I was late. I had to call in a mommy favor to have someone make sure my daughter wasn’t stranded at camp because I hit a detour and was stuck in gridlock. Rrrrrr… It’s such an awful feeling to be trapped. You really feel helpless. A car to the front, one behind and it’s 90 degrees outside. Something’s going to blow! Thank goodness for street savvy and GPS. For the most part, you don’t have to stay stuck, you can usually find a way around. It might take longer, but at least you are in motion again and more importantly, you regain a sense of control. In building your business there are bound to be times when things get in the way of your progress. It can be a small thing, like accidentally deleting a post you’ve been working on or […]

I Thought I Was Doing Great…And Then I Learned How To Sell

When I first started my business, I wasn’t sure how to market. I had just finished my training as a certified brand strategist and I thought, “Awesome, I’m ready to roll.” The only problem was I had NO idea how to get clients, none. When I was singing, I would audition for shows and the company sold the tickets. All I had to do was show up, look pretty and nail the high notes. If I was going succeed in business, I knew I had a lot of learning to do so I began my entrepreneurial education. Along the way, I heard about speaking to grow your audience and I thought, “Perfect, this will be a piece of cake. I know how to work a room, I’ve sung for thousands of people.” But I quickly realized, I still know what I was doing. What was I suppose to talk about? What exactly was my topic? I knew about branding, I knew about image consulting and I was very enthusiastic, but I had no clue how to structure a talk to sell a room. Not wanting to give up, I created something I thought was informative and interesting and hit the […]

The Summer Of Desire

“The Summer of Desire” It sounds like a steamy romance novel and well, it is sort of… Or maybe I should say it could be. It could be YOUR sultry story. As entrepreneurs we are hard-wired to be ambitious. It seems like every waking hour is dedicated to thinking about how to build our businesses. “How can I reach more clients? What products should I develop? What training course will help me get to the next level? Should I use Infusionsoft or Ontraport?” And the list goes on… This may surprise you, but thinking too much can be detrimental to your success. Being overly analytical stymies creativity and leaves no room for the heart. Of course, you need strategy to stay on track and you need grit to get the work done, but all work and no romance leaves Jane a boring and mediocre fem-bot. What you need is a little intrigue. Oh, la, la! Passion is the fuel for all great endeavors@HeatherPoduska (tweet this) Passion takes your breath away. Passion gives your vision wings. Passion makes your feel alive. Passion can also help you feel fully expressed when doing something you love. When you love what you do, your imagination can […]
