Is Your Brand A Traffic Hazard?

I don’t know what’s up in Boston lately, but there has been a ton of traffic and not just any traffic, bumper-to-bumper, sloth-moving, stand-still traffic.   I don’t know, maybe I’m just not used to the commuter grind like I used to be, but it feels like the volume of people on the roads has grown exponentially.   While I cherish the fact we live in such an amazing city, I don’t cherish the gridlock that accompanies it.   It’s virtually impossible to get where you’re going without becoming a master at switching lanes. But I gotta say, the thing that bothers me the most isn’t the driver who zips in front of me, that’s bound to happen. Nope, what makes my head spin is when someone is indecisive.   You see it all the time. Someone starts to switch lanes, but then instead of following through, the driver hovers over the dotted line blocking both lanes. Or someone comes to a rotary where they have the right of way and instead of moving, they inch forward backing up everyone behind them.   The reason it bothers me so much is because it stops the flow. Why make a move until you are sure of what you want? Just stay […]

You don’t get paid to sing in the shower…

Are you afraid of being too visible? I talk to a lot of entrepreneurs and often hear the following, “You know Heather, I don’t want to be a STAR, I just want to run my business.” I used to think, “Well, different strokes for different folks,” but I don’t feel that way any more. Now, I’m pretty much convinced that not wanting to be a star is simply fear masked as something else. Before you think I’m being judgmental, let me assure you, my belief comes from my own experience. You may think, based on my brand, that I am and have always been very comfortable being visible. However, internally there have been many times I’ve wanted to retreat and run for the hills. Those times usually look like the following: -My launch didn’t work so I feel embarrassed and want to hide. -I’m afraid IF I launch, no one will show up. -I’m afraid if I put myself out there and screw up, I’ll ruin my entire career. -I’m afraid I’m in over my head and people are going to see I’m just a poser. -I’m afraid I’ll say the wrong thing and offend someone. -I’m afraid people will see […]

How To Do The Hard Stuff

You know that feeling when you realize you have a dentist appointment on the calendar? You soooo don’t want to go, but you know you have to. Even though you know it’s the best thing for your health, you’d rather stick a fork in your eye. That’s how the last several days were for me. I had about a billion obligations that I absolutely did not want to deal with. For starters, our fridge broke and it was up to me to empty out all the rotting veggies and meat. Gross. I found out the tires on our minivan were bald and had to get them replaced. And there was yet another technical snafu with my website. That’s just a small sampling and I won’t bore you with the rest. They were all things I didn’t want to face, but still had to handle. We all have responsibilities that make us want to run for the hills. In our business it might show up like: -Not paying attention to expenses. -Procrastinating on creating a sales pages. -Avoiding picking up the phone to follow-up on leads. -Freaking out about doing a live-stream. But by not doing what we know we must, we move further and further away from creating a […]

Want To Master Time?

Do you ever finding yourself saying, “I wish I had more time?” Our lives can often feel out of balance. We get stuck involved in tasks or projects that suck our energy and keep us from doing the things we really want to do. We take on more than we can handle and find ourselves overwhelmed. It seems like there’s always something that feels unmanageable. We can’t seem to carve out time to go to the gym. Our summer calendar gets booked and we regret not allowing time to sit on the hammock with a cold drink and a juicy novel. As entrepreneurs, we get behind on our launches, miss opportunities to follow-up on leads, tax our minds with busy work and neglect our bodies all because we’re crunched for time. Whatever the specifics of the situation, running out of time can result in feeling rushed, anxious, sad or even resentful and for good reason. We are missing out on the best parts of our lives, leaving money on the table and pushing aside our deeper callings. Why do we do this to ourselves? I think the answer is pretty simple… fear. We fear if we don’t work our asses […]

How To Rebound After a Set-Back.

We’ve all been there, we’re plugging along in life or business and BAM, something happens to knock us off our feet. Maybe you lose your funding, you’re hit with a health scare or maybe you’re even duped by someone you trusted or with whom you invested. When you find yourself in that situation, it feels like your world is spinning out of control. How could this happen? How did we let it get this far? But more importantly, how can you get back on track as quickly as possible? First of all, let’s have a dose of honesty here. Not always, but often these things don’t come out of the blue. There are usually red flags along the way, but instead of taking heed, we dismiss them and march forward. Or we try to gloss them over instead of acknowledging them as the major warning signs they are. The problem is, we have our sights so fixed on what we think we want, we can’t see what’s right in front of us or perhaps more accurately, we’re unwilling to see it. This is where I think most people get off track. It feels too dangerous to slow down or evaluate […]

Are You Suffering From Heart Dis-ease?

Did you ever get a tight feeling in your chest? You might think it’s just indigestion, but what if it’s something more serious? What if you have heart dis-ease?   I’m not talking about the kind where your arteries are clogged up with cheesecake and hamburgers. I’m talking about when you are experiencing warning signs of heartache. Don’t get me wrong, I want you to eat right and exercise to protect the old thumper, but who the heck cares if you live to be 100 if you’re not fulfilled? The heart dis-ease I’m talking about is that heavy feeling in your chest that’s trying to tell you you’re not on the right path. You’re not living in alignment. And that breaks my heart. It’s saddens me deeply to think millions of people are sleep-walking through life without ever feeling truly alive. I don’t think that’s the way it’s suppose to be, especially when it comes to work. Here are some common signs your heart is breaking in your business… -You have low energy. -You are not excited about getting out of bed in the morning. -You resist picking up the phone to talk to clients. -You have to force yourself to “sit down […]

How To Make A Successful Comeback

In the game of life, you win some and you lose some. It happens to everyone, even the greats. What you may not realize is, winners actually lose waaaayyyyyy more often than losers. Before we go any further, let me clarify what I mean by “loser.” I mean those who quit or throw in the towel before they achieve their goals. If you’re still in the game, you’re a winner in my book. Because the game, whatever your game is, can get pretty rough. Even if you are doing something you love, there will always be challenges and disappointments and some bigger than others. If you’re still trying and committed with an open and hopeful heart, you’re a winner. But still, how do you overcome those bumps in the road? How do jump back up when it feels like you’ve been sucker-punched in the gut? If you don’t mind too terribly much, I’m going to take a play out of Tom Brady’s book. Now love him or hate him, you have to admit the guy’s a winner. Ever hear of a little thing called “Deflate Gate?” Last year Tom Brady was accused of deflating the Super Bowl game balls so […]

How To Make Your Dreams Come True

Well, it’s already half way through January. How are you doing with your New Year’s resolutions? Are they still in play, or have they been benched due to lack of performance? If your commitment has slipped a little bit, don’t worry, it’s not too late to get back on course. Before you jump back into the grind, however, you may want to consider WHY you haven’t stuck to the plan. Were your goals overly ambitious or perhaps not exciting enough to keep you motivated? Did you set up your environment to properly support you? Did you create your goals from a place of self-flagellation or from a place of self-love? If you fell off the wagon, either you weren’t sufficiently inspired or you didn’t have a plan in place to achieve your goals. Don’t hate me, but this year I’ve stuck to mine so far! Yup, I’ve radically cleaned up my diet and have been pushing myself harder at the gym. I am also streamlining my business model and I’ve already taken some BIG action steps towards both my profit and visibility goals! I gotta say, it feels really good. The reason I’ve been able to stay resolute this year is because I took the time to sit down to both contemplate […]
