Is Your Brand A Traffic Hazard?

I don’t know what’s up in Boston lately, but there has been a ton of traffic and not just any traffic, bumper-to-bumper, sloth-moving, stand-still traffic.   I don’t know, maybe I’m just not used to the commuter grind like I used to be, but it feels like the volume of people on the roads has grown exponentially.   While I cherish the fact we live in such an amazing city, I don’t cherish the gridlock that accompanies it.   It’s virtually impossible to get where you’re going without becoming a master at switching lanes. But I gotta say, the thing that bothers me the most isn’t the driver who zips in front of me, that’s bound to happen. Nope, what makes my head spin is when someone is indecisive.   You see it all the time. Someone starts to switch lanes, but then instead of following through, the driver hovers over the dotted line blocking both lanes. Or someone comes to a rotary where they have the right of way and instead of moving, they inch forward backing up everyone behind them.   The reason it bothers me so much is because it stops the flow. Why make a move until you are sure of what you want? Just stay […]

You don’t get paid to sing in the shower…

Are you afraid of being too visible? I talk to a lot of entrepreneurs and often hear the following, “You know Heather, I don’t want to be a STAR, I just want to run my business.” I used to think, “Well, different strokes for different folks,” but I don’t feel that way any more. Now, I’m pretty much convinced that not wanting to be a star is simply fear masked as something else. Before you think I’m being judgmental, let me assure you, my belief comes from my own experience. You may think, based on my brand, that I am and have always been very comfortable being visible. However, internally there have been many times I’ve wanted to retreat and run for the hills. Those times usually look like the following: -My launch didn’t work so I feel embarrassed and want to hide. -I’m afraid IF I launch, no one will show up. -I’m afraid if I put myself out there and screw up, I’ll ruin my entire career. -I’m afraid I’m in over my head and people are going to see I’m just a poser. -I’m afraid I’ll say the wrong thing and offend someone. -I’m afraid people will see […]

Simple Tips To Find Your Brand Voice

Do you ever have trouble figuring out just how to express your brand? I try to give you lots of strategies, but sometimes I wonder if I’ve done enough to help you find YOU. Because that’s what it’s all about. It’s not about twisting yourself a thousand different ways to see where you can sqqqqeeeeeezzzzeeee yourself into the market. There’s no need for squeezing, tweaking perhaps, but no squeezing. In fact, if you have a good handle on your brand voice, there’s little need to pay much attention to the market any…………………………Are you with me?…………….(crickets chirping….)………………………(“Are you out of your mind, Heather!!!!!! Of COURSE, I have to pay attention to the market.”) Actually, you don’t. You don’t have to know what Liesl, Friedrich, Louisa, Kurt, Briggitta, Marta or even Gretl are doing. You just need to focus on YOU and YOUR AUDIENCE. If you expend copious amounts of energy looking to the left and right, you are NOT spending time doing the deep work you you need to to create a truly epic brand. I have to admit, it takes guts of iron and a strong commitment to listen to what your authentic is saying, but there is no other way. It’s way […]

Come On Baby Light My Fire!

Can we get personal for minute? I want to know what turns you on. “Did she just say which I think she said…?” Hello, yes, I’m still here and yes, I did just ask, what gets you really excited? I mean truly HOT and bothered!! Forgive me if I’m going too fast, but life is short and I want you to enjoy every minute of it. You see, I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching lately and I’ve discovered something I hope is useful to you. Most of us are joy stoppers. Most of us only allow for a specifically allotted amount of happiness and abundance. And we are very stingy about HOW we think we can and should come by said bliss. Work hard. Pay your dues. Hustle. Keep striving. Success doesn’t come easy. Sound familiar? I have been as guilty as the next diva buying in to this belief system, but I’m starting to change my tune. As I mentioned last week, I’m still recovering from a very nasty bug. I’m feeling much better, but as a result, my vocal chords are swollen and raw and I can’t sing! Of course, I’m very sad, but there’s been a cool side benefit to being vocally […]

Ten Image Hacks To Look Like A Superstar

If you want to be a star in your industry, it’s important to look your best and show up like you mean business. Below is a list of ten basic tenets of superstar style. Enjoy! 1. Know thyself. There is no bigger turn-off than inauthenticity. If you’re not a glambot, don’t act like one with your image. You want YOUR essence and personality to be accentuated, not what you think the market will buy. Be yourself.   2. Understand your canvas. You have to understand what works with what your Mamma gave you. You may love the look your favorite celebrity is wearing, but that may not work on your body! You’ve got to make an intimate study of your bone structure and coloring. Once you understand your own personal template, you can make better choices.   3. Decide your brand vibe. How do you want to be perceived by your audience? Smart? Nurturing? Powerful? Creating a unique style starts with YOUR preferences. You don’t want be everything to everyone. Decide what it is you want to project and use that identifier as a filter for all of your image choices.   4. Choose your personal brand colors. This […]

How To Make A Successful Comeback

In the game of life, you win some and you lose some. It happens to everyone, even the greats. What you may not realize is, winners actually lose waaaayyyyyy more often than losers. Before we go any further, let me clarify what I mean by “loser.” I mean those who quit or throw in the towel before they achieve their goals. If you’re still in the game, you’re a winner in my book. Because the game, whatever your game is, can get pretty rough. Even if you are doing something you love, there will always be challenges and disappointments and some bigger than others. If you’re still trying and committed with an open and hopeful heart, you’re a winner. But still, how do you overcome those bumps in the road? How do jump back up when it feels like you’ve been sucker-punched in the gut? If you don’t mind too terribly much, I’m going to take a play out of Tom Brady’s book. Now love him or hate him, you have to admit the guy’s a winner. Ever hear of a little thing called “Deflate Gate?” Last year Tom Brady was accused of deflating the Super Bowl game balls so […]

Why There Is No Need For Cruz Control

I was a little behind the eight ball this week in writing my article, but I’m glad I waited. I want to share a perspective you might find helpful in building a POWERFUL BRAND. It occurred to me watching the Republican convention last night on television. I’m not a die-hard follower of politics, but I like to be informed and it certainly is entertaining and educational to watch the circus of a presidential election. In case you didn’t hear, last night Ted Cruz got booed on stage during his speech because he refused to endorse Trump for president. It was a crazy, bold move. Pretty shocking to every, everyone that is except for Trump. Apparently, Trump had read the transcript the night before and knew what Cruz was going to say. He had the option to ban Cruz from speaking, but that’s not what he did. Instead, he let Cruz take the stage and completely sabotage himself. Now whether you like him or not, whether you think he’s an insane megalomaniac or not, there is something very important to be learned here from what Trump did. He was so secure in his brand, he allowed a hater to take the […]

The Importance Of Intentional Personal Branding

Don’t look now, but your brand is following you. When most people hear the word brand it conjures up names like Nike, Apple or Coca-Cola, but brands are not just for corporations. They are for people too and not only for the likes of Oprah or Kim Kardashian. Each one of us has our own unique brand. For all we hear about brands, however, a lot of people are still not totally clear on what a personal brand is or why it’s important. Don’t be fooled, your personal brand is critical if you want to create a fulfilling career. It doesn’t matter if you are an entrepreneur, a corporate executive or a government employee; personal brand management is one of the most important jobs you have on your journey to success. So what exactly is a personal brand? In short, it is your reputation. Your brand is comprised of everything about you, your expertise, personality, work ethic, the way you dress and even the way you communicate. Basically, it’s everything you put out into the world that represents who you are. However, that’s only half of the equation. The other half is the perception of you held in the minds […]
